EUROSETI TO REVEAL STARTLING UFO IMAGES AT THE NATIONAL SPACE CENTRE!

Cribbed from slashdot.org:

"EuroSeti is set to reveal during the week of Jan 24-27 National Space Centre in Leicester, UK scientifically sound and verifiable evidence based on observations taken by the SOHO satellite and other satellites that indicate UFOs are present within our solar system. For the past two years, hundreds of extraordinary UFO-like images have been gleaned by a Spanish-based team using two space-based satellites. NASA initially tried to explain the images away as pixel faults, passing meteors or asteroids, etc., but when a European-led consortium presented them with images that clearly were none of the aforementioned, they 'clamped up.'"

Yeah, well, we'll see. I would guess that it's nothing. Also I do not approve of that spelling of the word center, even if it is on your metric ".uk" web site.

It has been really cold here. "Freezing". A good weekend to stay inside, which is pretty much what I did. Tonight I talked to my friend CMP, who is on some three-month layabout tour of Hawaii. He is on (in?) Maui at the moment. I was imagining him living some fringe existence on the beach with the other free spirits and swingers, but he actually is getting an apartment, bought a car, and is even looking for a job. He only plans to stay for 90 days though, at least that is his current plan. I can tell the place is working on him, because when our call ended he signed off by admonishing me to "hang loose".

I broke down and got a membership at a Blockbuster up here a few weeks back. I had been renting from some joint that had "Hollywood" in its name, but which was not actually part of a chain as far as I knew. I kept having problems playing the DVDs that I rented from them, so wound up running into the arms of the big name brand chain. Ha ha! Sucker. Here are some tiny comments on the movies I have rented and watched. To make this appear useful I will give you italics and hyperlinks. It is love.

Dog Soldiers. Tall, spindly, greyhound-furred werewolves shredding foulmouthed British soldiers. Gory, slow here and there and occasionally ridiculous, but possibly also great. It has that Night of the Living Dead primal fear thing going, where a group of battered and increasingly deranged people are surrounded by relentless monsters that want to eat them. Extra points for making me think of Sawney Beane. You should watch it unless you are inherently opposed to movies where blood could be said to "splash".

The Cube. Everybody but me probably knew about this movie. Seven random folks wake up to find themselves incarcerated in a big terror-death-maze, which is composed of eerie 14'x14' cubes. The cubes all appear identical but for their color, and some have deadly traps in them. The movie is just people arguing and trying to figure out how to escape. I liked this all right... was sort of here and there on the ending.

Comic Book Villains. I am assuming that the James Robinson who wrote and directed this is the same James Robinson who wrote the "Starman" series for DC Comics a few years back, but I could be mistaken. The premise is a comic book collector dies, and the owners of two different comic book stores try to convince the dead collector's mother to sell them his fabulous collection. I believe this was intended to be a black comedy. I didn't really like anything about this movie... I didn't believe the characters, wasn't laughing, then things degenerated into boring (that is, non-werewolf) violence.

Man of the Century. I don't know what the hell this was. I recall seeing Harry Knowles rave about this on his web site, which motivated me to rent it. I was curious. I think it was too clever for me, or I couldn't stop thinking and just enjoy, or, christ, I dunno. OK so it is set in New York City, in the 90s, but the main character inhabits his own personal timewarp where he exists as a - I guess - 1920s movie character, some fast-talking reporter. I could imagine people finding this charming; I just didn't get it, but who am I to shit all over someone's beautiful dream?

I have to get up at a more grown-up hour than usual tomorrow morning, as I am supposed to give Mike a ride to work. So, bed soon, but until then, Mack White's Villa of the Mysteries calls.

The Cube sounds kinda like that one Thirteen Ghosts. Did you see that?

I was surprised by how much I liked The Cube when I first saw it. While the ending was probably meaner than it needed to be, and it had it's cookie-cutter moments, I really did appreciate how the characters were trying to think their way out of their situation. It was a lot smarter than I was expecting. Definitely good B-movie fare.

It is in fact, the same James Robinson. Haven't seen it, but the guy landed the gig on "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" from it. Leauge I hear, is not what one would call "good." I saw "The Cube" a few years back and thought it sucked. I can't remember why. It might have been all the standing around and talking, but also, am I mistaken in thinking it's stupid? I am dying to see "Dog Soldiers."

I did... I liked the look of the ghosts in that one, but kept getting confused somehow by the story. The Cube is lower-key, less flashy and intense than 13 Ghosts, but I would guess had less money for effects and what not.

Early on The Cube made me think of a Twilight Zone episode, or one of Stephen King's "Night Shift" short stories (which I mean as a compliment although I realize not everyone would take it for one). I felt like it had an intriguing premise that was hard to follow up on in a fully satisfying way - do you answer all the questions that the viewer is going to have or not? But I did think that the set up was cool.

Hm wow... I have to say I kind of fear for that "League" movie. But I am sure I will at least try to rent it.

The Cube did have a good amount of standing around and talking. I was still taken with the premise. One of the things that nagged me the more I thought about it later was how did someone go about selecting this combination of people to put in the cube, who would each have some special thing to contribute to the escape effort? I know there were a ton of unanswered questions and the whole thing was pretty implausible, but that wound up bugging me the most.
