the Halloween you deserve

After some indecision, we settled on doing the same thing this year that we did last year for Halloween. We set up a fire pit by the end of our driveway, and put a folding table at the end of the driveway and put candy and other treats on the table. Then we hung out around the fire pit and drank hard cider and wine while trick or treaters came by.
I am sure it is the hard cider talking (J.K's Northern Neighbor - delicious and my favorite) but I had a great time. A couple of our neighbors joined us and praised my fire making skills. Many of the adults who came by liked stopping to warm themselves (it was cold out) by the fire, and the kids seemed to dig the assortment of stuff we had for them (candy of course, and glow necklaces / bracelets, vampire fangs with fake blood, 'make your own monster' kits we put together (play doh, pipe cleaners, googly eyes and some other craft elements), glow in the dark temporary tattoos of ghosts, some Halloween-themed fruit chews, and even a couple Halloween themed Pop Tarts).
We got a lot of nice comments on the Little Free Library, which made my day. We did a Halloween takeover of the LFL last week so were encouraging the trick or treaters to check it out.
It was just super nice and I got kind of a big head and also drank delicious cider and ate some candy and it was good.
After trick or treating officially ended, some people still came by. A few were OK but as Melissa pointed out we tended to get older, more aggressive trick or treaters at that point - teenagers without costumes. Oh well. It's all part of it. We paused to admire the moon, then doused the fire and packed up our stuff and went inside feeling like we made some people happy. And were happy ourselves.
Our street is really dark and our house is set back from the street so this worked out well. The neighbors announced the fire pit on Halloween was a tradition now and Melissa seemed to accept that so, I guess it is a thing. Cool. Unfortunately our friend Jeff couldn't make it this year but, hopefully next year. Now that it's a tradition.
And here I am inside our house petting the cats. Soon I'll get in a nice warm bed with my wife and, well, honestly, our sweet dog (at least for the first part of the night, til the dog decides to bail on us). This is Halloween. I am lucky.
