current six favorite songs hmmm
1. La Danseuse - Delma Lachney & Blind Uncle Gaspard. This is a song I like to listen to late at night. It is very pretty and for me has some otherworldly quality. A transmission from a higher plane where everything is all right and all expectations are met.
2. Shake It and Break It - Charley Patton. I don't know what he is singing about but it is probably something dirty, and he sounds like he's been drinking. Great singing though, great performance, crappy old quality recording but still so catchy.
3. The Way I Feel Inside - The Zombies. I watched The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou again a couple Sundays back and the scene with this song made me sad. It's such a little song but I like it lately.
4. Old Hen Cackle - Coleman & Harper. So much manic energy in this song. How was this possible for people from the olden days??
5 & 6. Black Star / Pocahontas - Gillian Welch. I got ahold of this little 'single' the other day and have been listening to it a fair amount since. Sometimes you hear a cover song that seems really clever and you see some reviewer say it's a "revelation", and neither of these songs are that but both are good and both are stuck in my noggin.
As far as songs go, I am chiefly in the grip of 'old timey' tunes right now. I was pondering on the way home today, what is that is comforting to me about this music from 80 or 90 years ago? Will people 100 years from now be listening to anthologies that put all kinds of unlikely songs from this era together? Anyway, just a few weeks ago I was all mixed up in the Steely Dan, and would've had a different list. Except #1 above is an all-time favorite.
