worrying about what other people think
May. 1st, 2003 12:09 amTomorrow morning I am supposed to go see this US Customs auction of seized goods. Yesterday we did a walk-through of some of the stuff that is going to be auctioned off. For the most part, this is not an auction for an individual who is looking for some interesting item, possibly a "Freakies" refrigerator magnet. This is more for someone who wants to buy 14,000 pairs of jeans that are categorized 'for export only'. There were characters walking through along with us who had headsets and digital cameras, people who were being serious and methodical, and for whom I take it this is part of their job.
Mike is fascinated by the whole thing though, and I will admit I am very curious to see what people wind up buying and how much they pay. The only thing I was interested in was some Playstation 2s that they had. They had various lots of them - some 10 in a lot, some just 1. I thought hey, I wouldn't mind having a Playstation 2. I have been feeling left out on these console games. But then I realized tonight, I couldn't name a single game I want to play on a Playstation 2. And I would have to buy the games, so it would be sort of like spending money in order to spend more money. Although the expectation is that the games would be fun. And there is something irrationally tempting about a possible bargain. "Wow, cheap Playstation 2! Did I want one of those? But it's such a good buy...." And so on. I am guessing we don't have much of a shot at winning or getting a deal vs. these auction pros anyway, so it probably doesn't matter. Plus, are you a jerk if you buy up someone's seized goods??
I am so tired but I have to say work has been kind of exciting lately. It's fun to be involved in creating something, even if it is something most people would think is boring. Of course I did get really crabby and argumentative several times today. Don't deal with pressure well. I would be trying to complete task A, while thinking a little about task B, then someone would start demanding to know when tasks C and D would be done and when can we start E. I don't respond well at times like that.
With being so busy at work I haven't been able to pay much attention to world events, or even to keep up with other journals here as I'd like to. I did get my Mother's Day mission accomplished though. So that's about it.
