This afternoon I went outside to go see if the washers in the apartment complex laundry room were free. There was a little girl standing on the sidewalk beside my apartment building. She was looking up at something in the tree above her. Her mom (well, I assumed) was a little further down the sidewalk holding a baby. I said hi and took a wide berth around the kid, then when I heard the tree branches shaking, I looked up to see what the little girl was looking at. I thought it would be a squirrel, but it was a little calico cat.
"Oh no!" I said to the mom. "Is that your cat?"
She said no. The cat appeared to be enjoying its audience. It was moving around on the branch comfortably and rubbing its head against small branches like, "Play with me! Pet me!"
Ignoring the fact that they found a kitten with rabies near here awhile back, I stepped closer and reached up to the cat. It walked down to my hand and nuzzled it, and let me pet it. Then quick as you like it walked down my arm and sat down on my shoulder, as though that was where it belonged. It started rubbing against my head and purring. I felt both amused and silly. I guess both applied.
"Um... heh heh... hmmm... ok...."
It climbed back to the tree after a bit and I pet it some more. It was quite the purrer and had very soft fur and green eyes. Seemed youngish to me, maybe even "pre pubescent" but not really a kitten anymore. I sat down on the sidewalk and it came over and received some more attention. After awhile it walked away. When I came back out with the laundry basket, it followed me to the laundry room, but then when I came out of the laundry room it was gone. I haven't yet seen it again.
Hmmm. It looked pretty well cared for and was definitely not feral... liked people a lot... but no collar... wonder what the story was. If I see it again maybe I'll try to bring it into my apartment. It seemed pretty friendly, I don't think it would be too hard. I think it was a girl-cat, if I am right about its age I hope it is not approaching queendom... scary thought. And as someone pointed out to me, if it comes home with me and the "rightful owner" turns up later, I can always give it back... would beat living on the street here I would think....
